From Toys to Cannabis: A Retailer's Consistent Formula
Klar launched Toyology Toys in West Bloomfield in 2011, expanding to multiple Metro Detroit locations through focus on quality products and customer experience. Now, he grows Quality Roots, starting with a Battle Creek dispensary for recreational and medicinal cannabis. "We pride ourselves, just like in our toy business, on our selection of goods. Not just in providing a variety of products but in providing the right variety," Klar says. This strategy reflects broader retail principles: success hinges on discerning customer needs rather than sheer volume.
Navigating Hamtramck's Mixed Reception
Hamtramck permits retail dispensaries, as the city never enacted an ordinance to ban them after Michigan legalized recreational marijuana in 2018. The community's first such outlet in November 2020 faced public backlash, with media coverage underscoring resident concerns over safety, youth access, and neighborhood character. Klar acknowledges the challenge: "We’re excited to show Hamtramck and the surrounding communities the value of having this kind of retail in the city. We’ll be working daily to earn everybody’s trust so that we can become a household name." The new site at 2024 Caniff Street opens Thursday, January 7.
Building Trust in a Regulated Market
Michigan's cannabis industry has matured since voters approved recreational sales, generating tax revenue while operators contend with strict licensing and local opt-outs. Klar's pivot draws on retail fundamentals—product knowledge, welcoming environments, and responsiveness—to differentiate Quality Roots. "It all comes in time. It’s not going to happen overnight," he notes. For entrepreneurs like Klar, earning acceptance means consistent service that aligns with community values, potentially setting a model as dispensaries integrate into urban fabric.
